About this work

This painting shows tiny, antlered humans pulling a big gourd on ropes. Drums and flutes play behind them. One dancer waves a fan and a branch to keep the crowd moving. It’s a wild, joyful scene from old Japan. The artist hid his name in the corner but we know he loved quirky, living pictures. Next time you’re in Cleveland, look for the gourd float at The Cleveland Museum of Art.
