A Monastery, probably in Turkey or Greece is a 1834 watercolor by William Page, a American Folk Art work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This watercolor shows an old stone building with arched doorways and a tiled roof. A person sits on a ledge reading, while another stands in the archway. The walls look weathered, and the ground is rough and uneven. The painting feels quiet and a bit worn, like a place that’s been around for a long time. The artist used soft colors and loose brushstrokes to focus on the textures of the stone and roof tiles. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more works like this.
The work titled *A Monastery, probably in Turkey or Greece* by William Page dates from approximately 1828 to 1840, reflecting the artist’s later picturesque style. It belongs to a series of landscapes produced in the late 1820s and 1830s, distinct from his earlier costume studies and architectural scenes. The painting was acquired from Beckett in October 1967 for fifteen pounds. Similar landscapes from this period, some signed by Page, are also held in the British Museum’s collection.
