Young man, you have capital, but no experience. That doesn't matter, you interest me is a 1858 by Paul Gavarni, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows two men at a wooden table in what looks like a dimly lit café. One man, younger and slouching, holds a small object while the other, older with a hat, leans in, gesturing with a bottle in his hand. The background is blurry, but you can make out a sign with writing and a window. The artist used quick, sketchy lines to show their expressions and body language, making the scene feel lively despite the monochrome tones. The title hints at a conversation about money and opportunity. Next, check out Romanticism to see how artists used emotion and everyday life in their work.
Paul Gavarni was the pen name of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier (13 January 1804 – 24 November 1866), a French illustrator, born in Paris.
