Adoration of the Magi is a 1637 by Pietro Testa, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing is packed with people and action. On the left, a tall building with columns stands behind a group of figures. In the center, a bright light shines down on a baby in a manger. Around them, lots of people kneel or stand, some holding gifts. The sky above is full of angels and swirling light. The artist used strong contrasts between light and dark to make the scene dramatic. The light focuses on the baby, making it stand out. Look up chiaroscuro next to see how this technique works.
Pietro Testa (1612 – 1 March 1650) was an Italian High Baroque artist active in Rome.
