John Piper painted a quiet watercolour of a bridge in 1940. It’s one of over 1,600 works made for the “Recording Britain” project. The scheme paid artists to document life during the war, especially outside big cities. This wasn’t just art. It was a record of everyday places like Tyringham before the bombs could fall. Piper’s brush caught the bridge as part of that larger effort. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum.
