About this work

This sketch shows a woman sitting sideways, her back to us. She wears a long dress with a high neckline and a skirt that pools around her. Her hair is pulled back, and she holds a folded cloth in her lap. The drawing is mostly in pencil, with some light shading to show the folds in her dress and the shape of her body. The paper has a border of dried leaves and a faded label at the top. The words "Study for Picture of the Governess" are written below the sketch. This suggests the woman might be a governess, a teacher for children in wealthy families. Next, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more of this artist’s work.
