Laban cherchant ses dieux (Laban Searching for his Household Gods) is a 1753 ink by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a busy scene of people gathered around a rocky outcrop. At the center, a bearded man stands pointing upward while others look around or kneel. Some figures hold objects or lean on staffs, and the background has swirling clouds and dramatic folds of fabric. The title at the bottom, *Laban Cherchant Ses Dieux*, hints this is a story about someone searching for lost gods. The artist used fine lines to create texture in the rocks and clothing, giving it a detailed, almost sketchy feel. Next, check out how this was made using the technique: etching.
Gabriel de Saint-Aubin was a French draftsman, printmaker, etcher and painter.
