The painting dates to 1465. It originally adorned a family chapel in a country house at Larniano, near San Gimignano, as documented by a Brogi photograph taken before 1904. By the 1920s and early 1930s it belonged to Count Silvio Piccolomini Clementini della Triana of Siena.
It subsequently passed to Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi in Florence, who sold it in June 1937 to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, New York. The Kress Foundation gave the work to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., in 1939, where it remains as part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection. No exhibition history is documented in the available sources.
