Shield with Lion, Held by Angel is a 1485 ink by Martin Schongauer, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white drawing of an angel holding a shield. The shield has a lion on it, and the angel has wings and curly hair. Below the shield, there’s a bird perched on a branch, and the whole scene is framed by a decorative border. The artist used fine lines to create shadows and texture, which makes the image look detailed. This style was common in the late 1400s. Look up engraving to see how artists like this made prints.
Martin Schongauer, also known as Martin Schön or Hübsch Martin by his contemporaries, was an Alsatian engraver and painter.
