Landscape with an Artist Sketching is a 1628 ink by Herman van Swanevelt, a Baroque work, depicting Monasteri, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a man sitting on a hill. He draws with a stick in a small book. A dog naps beside him. Trees and a distant town fill the background. Drypoint lines make the shadows deep and scratchy. The artist used this technique to get fine details in the light. The dog’s fur looks almost real.
