German Babylon (Babylone d'Allemagne) is a 1894 ink by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This lithograph shows a crowded Paris dance hall at night. A woman in a striped dress leans over a table, her face lit by a single lamp. Men in suits and hats fill the space, their backs turned to us. Lautrec made this print for a magazine. It’s rough and lively, not perfect. You can almost hear the music and see the cigarette smoke.
