A Cottage on Fire is a 1799 ink by Charles Turner, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This picture shows a small house burning bright in the dark. Flames shoot from the roof, lighting up the night sky. A few people stand nearby—one man in a tall hat, a woman in a long dress, and a child looking on. A dog sits quietly in the foreground. The scene looks cold and still, with a frozen river or pond in front. The fire’s glow makes the trees and buildings look dramatic against the shadows. The artist used bold colors to show the danger and chaos of the moment. Want to know more? Check out the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
