A basket-maker and his wife is a 1770 paint by Unknown, a Rococo painting work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This shows a man and woman sitting side by side. He holds a woven basket. She holds a spindle and thread. Both sit on the floor with calm faces. These South India paintings record everyday jobs. The red border frames each scene. The artist added cloud strips and heavy shadows under the feet. The English captions label each person’s work. See more like this at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
A basket-maker and his wife are depicted in one of thirty-six paintings illustrating South Indian castes and occupations. The man carries strips of cane, while his wife holds two baskets and an infant, set against a yellow background. The work is part of an album with a watermark dated 1799 and a bookplate bearing the name Joseph Whatley and the Latin motto *Pelle Timorem*. The painting features a red border, a strip of tangled cloud at the top, looped shadows beneath the figures, and a dark green ground.
