Durga and Jagaddhatri is a 1885 paint by Unknown, a Impressionism work, depicting Kalighat, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a woman with four arms sitting on a lion. She wears a red dress with gold jewelry and a yellow headpiece with blue feathers. Below her, a blue-skinned creature with fangs and horns looks up. The woman’s calm face and the lion’s fierce pose create a strong contrast. This style comes from a tradition called *kalighat*. Look up kalighat to see more paintings like this one.
The painting is an opaque watercolor on paper from 1885, depicting the goddess Durga in the form of Jagaddhatri. It was acquired in 1894 from Miss M Steele, whose mother, a Sanskrit scholar at Cambridge, had inherited the work; Steele noted that her grandmother, who had lived in India, may have originally collected the piece.
