About this work

This painting shows a stormy sea with two ships locked in battle. One ship has its sails billowing in the wind, while the other looks smaller and is on fire. The water churns dark and rough, and the sky above is heavy with storm clouds. Notice how the fire on the smaller ship lights up the dark water around it. The artist used bold contrasts between light and shadow to make the scene dramatic. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this technique works in other famous paintings.
