Le concert agreable is a 1776 ink by Charles Nicolas Varin, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows four people in a wooded park. Two women in fancy 18th-century dresses stand near a man playing a small guitar. Another man lies on the grass, reading a book while holding a flute. Trees and bushes fill the background, and a small stool and chair sit nearby. The scene looks like a relaxed gathering—music, reading, and conversation all at once. The artist used shading to make the clothes and trees look three-dimensional. Next, check out the technique: etching to see how artists like this carved lines into metal plates.
