In the Garden House Reach, Calcutta is a 1788 watercolor by William Daniell, a Patna School of Painting work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This watercolor shows a calm river with small boats carrying people, some standing, some seated. On the left, a big sailing ship sits in the distance, while on the right, a large building with tall columns stands behind palm trees and smaller trees. The sky is light and soft, and the water reflects the boats and shore. The artist used loose, sketchy brushstrokes to capture the scene quickly, focusing on light and movement over detail. The boats and trees are simple but full of life, making the whole picture feel lively. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more works like this in person.
