This painting shows a rocky cliffside dropping into deep blue water. The rocks are layered in shades of gray and brown, with patches of green plants clinging to cracks. Above, a grassy hill slopes down to meet the cliffs, and a few birds fly near the water’s surface. The artist paid close attention to how light hits the rocks, making some areas look rough and others smooth. The watercolor style keeps it loose but detailed, especially in the texture of the cliffs. Look up William Henry Stopford to see how he painted other landscapes.
