About this work

This busy street scene shows a crowd of people going about their day. On the left, a woman holds a tray of food while a man in fancy clothes talks to a child. Upstairs, someone leans out a window, and a sign reads "Gunpowder." In the background, a church steeple rises above the rooftops. Notice the mix of rich and poor—some in fine coats, others in rags. The artist packed in lots of tiny details, like the woman selling food and the man sweeping the street. Next, look up Baroque to see how this style used drama and movement in everyday scenes.
