About this work

This photo shows Ellen Terry on stage as Margaret in *Faust* at London’s Lyceum Theatre in 1885. It’s a period piece made with glass negatives and albumen prints, pasted on card. Victorian actors posed for these “cabinet cards” to sell to fans. The prints were bigger and tougher than earlier “cartes de visite,” and this one sits in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Guy Little Collection today. Look up the Victoria and Albert Museum next.

The story of this work

Overview

A sepia photograph from 1885 depicts Ellen Terry in her role as Margaret in *Faust* at the Lyceum Theatre. The image belongs to a collection of albumen prints on card mounts, typical of Victorian theatrical portraiture known as *cartes de visite* or *cabinet cards*. The photograph was later removed from its backing and included in an album assembled by collector Guy Tristram Little before being donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The collection represents a significant group of 19th-century theatrical photographs.
