Count Nicolas Zrinyi is a 1535 ink by Mathis Zündt, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a bearded man in fancy armor and a tall, feathered hat. Behind him, a detailed map of a landscape with castles and rivers fills the left side. Tiny scenes of battles and people appear around the edges, and a long text runs along the bottom. The portrait looks like it’s celebrating a military leader, with the map possibly showing his lands. The artist used sharp lines to create texture, especially in the armor and feathers. Next, check out etching to see how artists like Zündt made these precise prints.
Matthias Zündt (sometimes Zynndt; 1498–1586) was a German engraver, born at Nuremberg.
