About
The Deutscher Werkbund, founded in Munich in 1907 through the initiative of Hermann Muthesius, united architects, artists, and industrialists to raise the quality of German manufactured goods through design reform. Its 1914 Cologne exhibition became a touchstone of early modernism, and members including Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, and Bruno Taut shaped the trajectory of industrial design and architecture. The Werkbund directly seeded the Bauhaus and influenced similar organisations in Austria, Switzerland, and Scandinavia.
