Matthew Pratt left his Pennsylvania home in the 1760s and landed in London, where he walked into Benjamin West’s busy studio. West, an American who’d just returned from years in Italy, was already a rising star. Pratt stayed long enough to watch West teach a room full of artists, then sat down himself at an easel and painted what he saw.
That painting, The American School, is Pratt’s claim to fame. In one quiet corner of the canvas he included a self-portrait, hat on, brush in hand, watching West point to a drawing on the wall. The rest of the picture hums with studio gossip: students bent over easels, a model in the background, daylight slanting through tall windows.
Look for Pratt’s light touch. His colors stay calm, almost pastel, and his people feel like real people, not stiff mannequins. The room itself, crowded, slightly messy, feels like a place you could step into.
Pratt never chased history paintings; he stuck to portraits back home and left behind one snapshot of art-school life that still feels fresh.
