Sappo is a 1917 by Anders Zorn, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a woman sitting on the ground, holding a baby. The lines are rough and scratchy, like quick strokes with a pencil or pen. The background looks like wild grass or brush, all drawn with the same fast, uneven marks. The artist focused on simple shapes and movement, not smooth details. The woman’s pose is relaxed, but the lines make it feel alive and a little messy. Next, check out Anders Zorn (Swedish, 1860–1920) for more of his work.
Anders Leonard Zorn was born in February 1860 in Mora, Dalarna, the illegitimate son of a Bavarian brewer and a Swedish farmer's daughter; his mother died shortly after his birth, and his grandparents raised him.
