The Triumph of Julius Caesar [no.5 and 6 plus 2 columns] is a 1599 ink by Andrea Andreani, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print is packed with figures in a busy, dramatic scene. On the left, a group of people on horseback carry tall torches and a large banner. In the center, a man on a chariot holds a scroll while others cheer or fight. To the right, more people march with weapons and standards, and a towering column stands in the background. The whole image is framed by ornate borders with swirling patterns and small figures. The artist used a technique called *chiaroscuro*—shadows and light create depth in the flat print, making figures pop. Notice how the dark areas guide your eye through the chaos. Look up technique: woodcut to see how this print was made.
