The work depicts Van Os's atelier, including a monumental 17th-century mantelpiece and a kneeling assistant identified as 'de Vries,' as documented in a 1902 letter from Jan Striening. Provenance traces from Mauve to his friend Jan Striening, then to Joseph Drucker, who donated it to the Rijksmuseum in 1910 as part of the Druckeruitbouw. The painting is held by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam under inventory number SK-C-1437.
