Osias Beert the Elder completed this still life in 1615. The painting first appears in the collection of Kunsthandel P. de Boer, Amsterdam, before being purchased in 1952 by a private collector in Sweden. After inheritance by his son, it was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 6 July 1994 (lot 17).
The work then passed to Johnny Van Haeften Gallery and was acquired by the National Gallery of Art on 24 May 1995. This ownership chain, recorded in the 1994 Sotheby's catalogue, is corroborated by institutional records. No commission details are documented.
