Dempsey and Firpo is a 1924 ink by George Bellows, held at National Gallery of Art.
The painting depicts a boxing match in a crowded arena. Two boxers are in the ring, one standing and the other falling to the ground. The boxer standing has his arms raised, wearing boxing gloves. The fallen boxer is wearing shorts and has his arms and legs splayed out. The crowd is watching the match, some with their mouths open in shock. In the foreground, the crowd is densely packed, with some people standing on their chairs to get a better view. The boxing ring is surrounded by ropes, and the background is dark, with spotlights shining down on the ring. This painting is a great example of the work of artist Bellows, George.
George Wesley Bellows (August 12 or August 19, 1882 – January 8, 1925) was an American realist painter, known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City.
