A Family (Une Famille) is a 1890 ink by Paul-Albert Besnard, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman and a child sitting close together, their backs to us. The woman wears a dark hat pulled low, and the child’s head rests on her shoulder. Light fades around them, leaving their faces half in shadow. The artist used lines to build up the shapes, almost like scribbled shadows. The paper has a textured look, like the marks were pressed into it. Try looking up etching to see how artists create these layered textures.
Paul-Albert Besnard (1849–1934) was a French artist, born in 7th arrondissement of Paris.
