Following Benjamin's tenure, the portrait was acquired by Rose M. de Forest of New York. Thomas B. Clarke purchased the piece from de Forest on November 5, 1921. After Clarke's death, his estate sold the painting through M. Knoedler & Co. on January 29, 1936, to the A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust, which subsequently gifted it to the National Gallery of Art in 1940.
The portrait is currently held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., as part of the Andrew W. Mellon collection. Its ownership history traces from the sitter's widow, Charlotte Hughins Murray, who gifted the work to Richard Rush in Philadelphia by 1836.
