The Massacre of the Innocents is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a chaotic scene of soldiers on horses. They’re charging through a town, trampling people on the ground. The buildings look fancy but are falling apart. The crowd below is tangled up, some screaming, others lying still. Notice the tiny, detailed faces—some are soldiers, others are crying kids. The artist packed a lot of drama into a small space. This style is part of the Baroque movement.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
