The Promenade is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows two people walking on a path by a river. The man wears a wide-brimmed hat and a loose shirt, while the woman has a long dress and a hat with a feather. Behind them, a tree with thick branches leans over the path, and a small town sits in the distance. The artist used fine lines to show texture—notice how the water and grass look almost woven. This style was common in etchings, where ink is pressed into a metal plate. Look up etching to see how artists like this made prints.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
