Camille Pissarro created this oil on canvas painting in 1897. In February of that year, at the invitation of his gallery owner and art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, Pissarro took a hotel room at the corner of the boulevard des Italiens and the rue Drouot. Pissarro wrote to his son Lucien that he believed Durand-Ruel would be interested in a series of Parisian urban views, particularly since Claude Monet's Haystacks series had sold well.
Suffering from an eye ailment that restricted his ability to work outdoors, Pissarro painted the Boulevard Montmartre views from his hotel room window. This work belongs to a series of 14 canvases depicting the boulevard in different seasons and lighting. Signed and dated lower left "C. Pissarro.
97", the painting entered the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1960, gifted by art collector Katrin S. Vietor in loving memory of her husband Ernest G. Vietor.
