In the Omnibus [recto] is a 1890 chalk by Mary Cassatt, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows three people on a city sidewalk. A woman in a wide-brimmed hat holds a child’s hand while another woman stands close by. The buildings behind them are drawn in loose, quick lines, and the figures look slightly blurred. The artist used soft shading to show light and shadow, not sharp details. The clothes and hats look like everyday wear from the late 1800s. Check out Impressionism next to see how artists used light and quick strokes.
Mary Stevenson Cassatt (; May 22, 1844 – June 14, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker.
