The Pool with Stags is a 1845 by Charles François Daubigny, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet forest scene with two deer drinking at a small pond. Tall trees with thick trunks and drooping branches frame the water, and the ground is covered in rocks and plants. In the distance, a path winds through the trees, and a lone figure rides a horse along it. The artist used loose, sketchy lines to suggest movement in the water and leaves. The deer look calm, almost unaware of the rider far off. Next, check out Romanticism to see how artists used nature to express emotion.
