House with a Turret, No. 22, rue de L'Ecole de Médecine, Paris, (called the Turret of Marat) is a 1861 by Charles Meryon, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a tall, lumpy building with a pointy tower and a small statue on top. Below, a crowd of people and horses fills a narrow street, some looking busy, others still. The lines are scratchy and dark, like ink drawn fast—buildings lean in, and clouds swirl above. Notice how the artist packed in tiny lines to show light and shadow, almost like a spiderweb. This was a real Paris street, but the mood feels dreamy and crowded. Want to see more? Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art for other works by this artist.
Charles Meryon (sometimes Méryon, 23 November 1821 – 14 February 1868) was a French artist who worked almost entirely in etching, as he had colour blindness.
