Peeters demonstrated considerable skill in rendering naturalistic textures, contrasting the slippery fish scales, thickly glazed clay, rough oyster shells, and cat fur with the gleaming pewter dish. She increased the illusion of space within the picture by incorporating reflections on the metal dish and by painting a chip taken out of the rounded edge of the table, a trick used to create a sense of depth. Her working method involved collaboration with assistants, and she often painted the same objects with the same dimensions, using patterns or tracings to save time and labor. As a result, her works often resemble one another in size and content, though they remain individually signed rather than serially produced.

The painting was owned by the prominent collector John G. Johnson, whose collection subsequently entered the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the work resides today. Despite her significant contributions, she remained relatively obscure for centuries, with recent scholarship reviving interest and highlighting her role as a trailblazer for female artists.
