History & Provenance
The painting entered the trade at Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York in 1977 and was sold in 1982 to a private collection, possibly that of Mr.
Warwick Castle, England was painted by Jasper Francis Cropsey in 1857 in oil on canvas. The work was commissioned by Cyrus W. Field of New York. It subsequently passed to his daughter, Mrs. William Francis Judson, then to her son Cyrus Field Judson, and then to his daughter, Mrs. Frank McCoy of Washington.
The painting entered the trade at Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York in 1977 and was sold in 1982 to a private collection, possibly that of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hirschl of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. In 1991 it was given to the National Gallery of Art.
Warwick Castle, England by Jasper Francis Cropsey entered the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1991 as a gift. The painting's provenance traces from its 1857 commission by Cyrus W. Field of New York, descending through his daughter Mrs. William Francis Judson, her son Cyrus Field Judson, and his daughter Mrs. Frank McCoy of Washington. Hirschl & Adler Galleries of New York handled the work from 1977, with a 1982 sale to a private collection, possibly Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hirschl of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, before the 1991 gift to the NGA. The canvas measures 81.1 by 132.3 centimeters and is catalogued within the NGA's collection.
