About this work

This lithograph shows five men around a dinner table. A man in the center serves food while the others stare with shocked or angry faces. The room looks plain, with simple chairs and a dark background. Daumier made this to poke fun at snobby dinner parties. He used sharp lines and big expressions to show how silly formal meals could be. The man serving food looks tired, like he’s stuck with boring guests. Daumier often mocked high society in his work.
