Ah! Jeune homme à ton bienfaiteur is a 1774 ink by Nicolas Delaunay, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows two men in a dimly lit room. One sits at a small table, holding a piece of paper and looking up at the other man, who stands with his hand outstretched, as if offering or refusing something. A candle flickers between them, and a curtain hangs heavy in the background. The standing man’s hat and coat suggest he’s just arrived or is about to leave. The seated man’s relaxed posture and loose papers hint at a casual but tense moment, maybe about money or a favor. This is an etching, a printing method where artists scratch into metal plates to create images.
Nicolas Delaunay (1739–1792) was a French artist, born in Paris.
