A Black Man Feeding a Horse is a 1662 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a Black man in a loose shirt and turban bending to feed a horse. The horse’s head is turned slightly, its reins loose. In the background, a smaller figure stands near another horse, also in profile. The artist used quick, scratchy lines to show fabric and skin, giving it a rough, textured look. This style was common in etchings of the time. Next, check out the technique: etching.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
