Polish Attendant with Two Horses is a 1637 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a man riding a horse, with another horse walking beside him. The man wears a tall hat and loose clothes, holding the reins loosely. The horses look strong, with thick manes and tails. The whole scene is drawn in black lines on light paper, with no color. The artist used a technique called *etching*—where acid bites into a metal plate to create lines. This makes the image look like it was scratched into the paper. Next, look up etching to see how it works.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
