Polish Cavalier is a 1637 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a man in a long coat and feathered hat riding a horse. Behind him, a small dog walks, and more people on horseback follow in the distance. The scene looks like a countryside road, with buildings faintly visible in the far background. The artist used sharp lines to show texture, especially in the horse’s fur and the rider’s clothing. This technique makes the image feel detailed even though it’s just black and white. Next, check out how this was made using the technique: etching.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
