Chinurile Mariei is a 1645 by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, a Baroque work, held at Brukenthal National Museum.
This painting shows three figures in a dimly lit space. On the left, a winged person in a red-and-white outfit holds a round object and a trumpet. In the center, a woman kneels on a rocky ground, wearing a dark robe and holding a bundle of tools. To the right, another winged figure in red and blue stands with a spear and a shield. The woman’s tools include a hammer and what looks like a small anvil, hinting at a craft or trade. The angels’ wings and serious expressions suggest this scene carries deeper meaning. Look up chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and shadow like this.
Abraham van Diepenbeeck (9 May 1596 (baptised) – between May and September 1675) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, glass painter, print maker and tapestry designer who worked most of his active career in Antwerp.
