The work entered the collection of George Agar-Ellis, 1st Baron Dover (1797–1833) and descended to his granddaughter, the Hon. Lilah Agar-Ellis, later Lady Annaly, who owned it until circa 1922. At that time it was sold through M. Knoedler & Co. to Andrew W. Mellon; Mellon gave it to his daughter Ailsa Mellon Bruce by 1937, and she bequeathed the painting to the National Gallery of Art in 1970. The sources do not record who commissioned the portrait.

The painting is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it entered the collection as part of the 1970 bequest of Ailsa Mellon Bruce.
