Album of Miscellaneous Subjects is a 1654 unspecified by Fan Qi, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This album has small, quiet scenes—mountains wrapped in mist, a frog on a leaf, a cricket on a twig. Fan Qi painted it after the Ming dynasty fell. The new Qing rulers were Manchu, not Han Chinese. Many artists stopped working for the court. Fan Qi turned to tiny, careful brushstrokes instead. Each insect feels alive, each blade of grass precise. Look up more works in the subject: china, qing dynasty (1644-1911).
Half of this album depicts landscapes; the other half depicts insects, birds, and natural subjects. Emanating peace and tranquility, Fan Qi’s landscapes reveal a quiescent vision and luminescence that lends an otherworldliness to his images. His insects and birds show his attention to minutiae and technical facility in the control of the brush.
