Benediction a Lourdes is a 1912 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman in a long dress kneeling on the ground, her hands pressed together in prayer. Behind her, a priest in robes holds a small object—maybe a cross—while another person sits nearby in a chair. The lines are loose and quick, with lots of shading to suggest movement and emotion. The artist used ink and wash to create a rough, sketchy feel, almost like a quick note from a scene. The setting looks like an outdoor religious gathering, possibly a moment of healing or blessing. Check out more of Forain, Jean-Louis’s work to see how he played with light and shadow in his sketches.
