The Eve of Victory is a 1918 by George Bellows, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows five soldiers in heavy coats, standing close together. Their faces are rough and tired-looking, with one man in the center raising his hand to his head. The background has quick, loose drawings of birds flying and a faint outline of a building or ship. The lines are scratchy, like quick pencil strokes. The artist left notes and measurements in the corners, almost like a blueprint. The soldiers’ uniforms look worn, and their postures feel stiff—maybe they’re waiting or exhausted. Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this sketch in person.
