Evanouissement à l'audience (Fainting at the Hearing) is a 1910 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows three people in a courtroom. One woman in a hat leans forward, another woman slumps in a chair with her head back, and a man stands behind her. The lines are loose and quick, like hurried scribbles. The slumped woman’s pose suggests she’s fainting. The artist used a mix of light and dark lines to show movement and emotion. Check out etching, drypoint, aquatint to see how this technique works.
