War Series: The Last Victim is a 1918 by George Bellows, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This dark room shows a chaotic scene with five people. A woman in a long dress stands in the center, arms outstretched, as if pleading. Two men on the floor look injured or dead, one with a bandage on his head. Two other men stand nearby, one holding a lantern, their faces tense and worried. The room is cluttered with broken furniture and dim light. Notice how the artist uses strong contrasts between light and dark to create drama. The woman’s face is lit up, while the rest of the room stays shadowy. Look up chiaroscuro to learn how this lighting technique works.
George Wesley Bellows (August 12 or August 19, 1882 – January 8, 1925) was an American realist painter, known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City.
